The project is aimed at contributing toward the rural development of Gran Chaco Americano
(Argentina, October 7, 2016) On October 5 and 6, a workshop was carried out at INTA Argentina’s experiment station in the town of Ingeniero Juárez, province of Formosa. The workshop focused on building an innovation platform for “Gran Chaco Americano” based on a partnership among Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay.
This platform aims at building capacities to help “Gran Chaco Americano” family farmers adapt to the impacts of climate change.
The partnership comprises the organized civil society, the private sector, national and local governments. National governments are represented by Argentina’s National Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA), Paraguay’s Agricultural Technology Institute (IPTA), and Bolivia’s National Agriculture and Forestry Innovation Institute (INIAF). FONTAGRO was represented at the event by its administrator, Eugenia Saini, PhD.
More than thirty technicians and researchers from Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay worked over two days to draft the action plan to coordinate institutional and technical efforts to strengthen comprehensive forestry, beekeeping, and livestock systems, as well as the smart management of native forests, within the context of climate change.
The Project
The “Innovation Network for the Rural Development of Gran Chaco Americano within the Context of Climate Change” project is funded by a partnership between FONTAGRO and PROADAPT. PROADAPT is funded by the Nordic Development Fund, the MIF, and the IDB.
The exchange of knowledge and experiences regarding resilience to climate change will help build the capacity of decision makers, technicians, and family farmers to identify and implement adaptation measures and strategies for beekeeping and livestock production activities in the native forest, which is predominant in Gran Chaco.
This platform will also multiply linkages, partnerships, and networks, thus strengthening institutions in the region and mobilizing public and private efforts to bridge the gap between family farmers and innovations that will enable them to sustainably adapt to climate change.
